New Air Traffic Control Tower Equipped with High Tech Cameras

As economies begin to reopen, air travel is taking off. Back in April, London City Airport became the first major international airport in the world to be fully controlled by a remote digital air traffic control tower.

The digital tower is equipped with 14 high-definition cameras, and two pan-tilt-zoom cameras operated remotely by air traffic controllers who work in Swanwick, more than 100 kilometres away from the runway.

“The future of aviation is really exciting and what the new tower enables us to do is manage our airspace more efficiently and more safely as we grow,” said Alison FitzGerald, London City’s Chief Operating Officer.

The new tower is projected to bring about significant savings in the long run. That’s good news for AIMCo clients who hold London City Airport in their Infrastructure portfolios.
